Medical Check-up @ CMPB

I went for the medical check-up at Central Manpower Base (CMPB) today, the overall experience was quite cool.

There were 6 main stations after the photo taking session; what I can say is that the sirs (all those army seniors tending the station) there are quite friendly and approachable.

My friends and I reached there at around like 10.30am, and we left there at about 4pm, with all stations’ tests done and also, the Manpower Aptitude Assessment System (MAPAS), which assess us on our mental abilities.

What can I say about this MAPAS? I totally screwed up in the ARITHMETIC, PHYSICS and the ROTATING sections. The rest are rather simple, especially the section where numbers are flashed and we are to remember them – I’m surprised that I’m able to get through it all without noting down anything on the rough paper provided. :D

One thing which upsets me is that I got PES B, due to being overweight by 2 KG. T_T” I was hoping for PES A!

Anyone whom have not yet went for CMPB, do control your diet – or else you will regret it if you’re post to PES BP due to obesity.

Last but not least, I’m looking forward to CHINESE NEW YEAR! :P

Till I update again.

Differences between Sprain & Strain

Last friday, I sprained my ankle during physical training. There isn’t any signs of swollen, blue-black or anything. I thought it would recover by itself soon.

So have you guys ever though, what is the difference between those “hurt” on your ankle or muscles, what are serious and what are not? Ever curious about it?

Yes! You got the right guy! Here’s what I can share with you:

What is a Sprain?
A sprain is an injury involving the stretching or tearing of a ligament (tissue that connects bone to bone) or a joint capsule, which help provide joint stability.

A severely damaged ligament or joint capsule can cause instability in a joint. Symptoms may include pain, inflammation, and in some cases, the inability to move a limb (arm, leg, foot). Sprains occur when a joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion, such as turning or rolling your ankle.

What is a Strain?
Strains are injuries that involve the stretching or tearing of a musculo-tendinous (muscle and tendon) structure. An acute (instant or recent) strain of the musculo-tendinous structure occurs at the junction where the muscle is becoming a tendon. These strains take place when a muscle is stretched and suddenly contracts, as with running or jumping.

This type of injury is frequently seen in runners who strain their hamstrings. Many times the injury will occur suddenly while the runner is in full stride. Symptoms for an acute muscle strain may include pain, muscle spasm, loss of strength, and limited range of motion.

Chronic (long-lasting) strains are injuries that gradually build up from overuse or repetitive stress, resulting in tendinitis (inflammation of a tendon). For example, a tennis player may get tendinitis in his or her shoulder as the result of constant stress from repeated serves.

Severity of sprains and strains
A physician categorizes sprains and strains according to severity.

- A Grade I (mild) sprain or strain involves some stretching or minor tearing of a ligament or muscle.
- A Grade II (moderate) sprain or strain is a ligament or muscle that is partially torn but still intact.
- A Grade III (severe) sprain or strain means that the ligament or muscle is completely torn, resulting in joint instability.

How to treat them?
Grade I injuries usually heal quickly with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). Therapeutic exercise can also help restore strength and flexibility. Grade II injuries are treated similarly but may require immobili-zation of the injured area to permit healing. Grade III sprains and strains usually require immobilization and possibly surgery to restore function.

Hope it helps ya! :)

Chatting with MM Lee

MM came to NYP few days ago, on the 5th January 2009, visited the School of Interactive & Digital Media & School of Engineering, last but no least, he had a dialogue session with 10 students from various schools in NYP, to find out more about the students studying here, in NYP.

Many people are rather interested in what did MM Lee actually asked us about. I am one of the representative in this dialogue session, representing School of Engineering (Electronics), so I would be able to share with you guys about this experience.

First of all, MM Lee is a very gentle and nice man. At first, I felt very pressured, especially at the start of the dialogue session – Mr Chan Lee Mun, our very own Principal+CEO of NYP, is doing a presentation to MM Lee; I am sitting right between him and Mr Chan, whom is doing the presentation!

This makes me feel as though he was looking at me when he is actually looking at Mr Chan! I’m nervous enough already, and this just add on to my nervous-ness..

After the presentation comes to an end, we started the dialogue session. MM Lee start the session by posting questions to us, the situation is quite tensed up at first, in the sense that everyone (students) are so nervous & excited, the feeling is like as though you’re talking to your idol, and much more than that! You can almost scream the hell out. (trust me, you’ll be sooooo excited. If you’re there, you will understand what I mean :D )

After posting questions to most of the other students, and chatting with them, everyone (students) have become more relaxed, because MM Lee is very friendly to us, he joke with us, he always has a gentle smile and he really give us a feeling like as though he’s our kin. (perhaps, our grandpa :D ) Everyone (students) tend to be able to speak more naturally and freely, without being afraid of not being formal enough when we are answering our questions (formal in a way that we have to use very standard english, correct way of grammar and phrasing of sentences)

First of all, I’d like to say that in my opinion, I find that he asked us on rather personal question, in a sense that he don’t really ask us what is our course about or stuffs like that.

It’s quite obvious, because if his interest is in our courses, he just have to ask one of our lecturers there or simply get a brochure and read about it. He’s here to find out more (not facts and information from paper) from us, the students.

Finally, it’s my turn. I was very relaxed and natural at first, but the moment he talked to me, I became soooo nervous. My hands start to tremble, not because I am scared, it’s because I am so excited that I could hardly control my hands, I normally see him on textbooks, computer screen, television and etc – I have never seen him in person, let alone talking to him.

“AM I DREAMING?”

The kind of unrealistic feeling comes to me… Firstly, MM Lee asked me how could he pronounce my surname, “Kong”. He pronounces “Koh”, and “Korr”. (Well, it’s seriously hard to express the pronounciation using words, try asking me verbally and I will pronounce it to you), and I tell him that it is pronounced as King Kong‘s “Kong”.

(King Kong is the name of a fictional giant ape from the fictional Skull Island, who has appeared in several works since 1933 – Wikipedia)

I’m glad he laughed! Okay, that makes me a little bit less nervous. Then he asked me questions like the following:

- Do you intend to go for further studies?
- If do, do you prefer local university or oversea university? What made you make that decision (As in, why local university and why oversea university?)
- How do you plan to finance your studies in university?
- Other more personal questions, such as what does my parents work as, at where, and stuffs like that – because my father work as a business man and has a eating house, and he is going to move, MM Lee asked/chatted with me on stuffs like, why do my father want to shift location of the eating house? He is going to lose customer right? And stuffs like that~ (Yes, he is a very nice and gentle man :D )
- To add on to the previous point, MM also asked about things like how many sibilings do I have, where are they studying at and stuffs like that.

I believe that’s all? :)

IMPORTANT: All the above “questions” are what I mentioned are what I roughly remember MM asking me (I may missed out some or mistyped any of them), they are not directly quoted from MM Lee.

We were told that the dialogue session was to end in 12 minutes’ time, but he stayed with us for around one hour if I’m not wrong, (again, I’m not 100% sure about this, it’s just a rough feel), and we (the students) went out of the room and waited for MM to come out after the interview (if you watched the news, you will know exactly what MM said during the interview – yes, there’s only one interview where MM speaks to the media regarding this visit)

Here’s the highlight for me, the group photography taking session! It’s so cool, I’m super excited even now, when I’m typing this post – I am in the picture! The same picture as MM Lee! It’s like striking TOTO or 4D and more than that! :D

I’m in the same picture with our very own modern Singapore’s founding father! Although he’s on the first row and I’m far away on the third row, I’m contented! :D Super contented already!

It’s not like everyone can get to take picture with MM Lee! I’m still waiting for the Media to send the photo to NYP’s Registrar, then they will give us (students) a copy of it. I’m really looking forward to it! :D

Dear fellow NYP friends of mine, let me ask you a question:

There are 5 Polytechnics in Singapore – why did MM Lee choose to visit NYP?

So What does this show?

In case you don’t know, MM Lee visited Singapore Polytechnic before, in the 1970s, and ever since then, this visit to Nanyang Polytechnic is his following visit.

And if you are from Diploma of Multimedia Infocomm & Technology, why did he choose to visit our school, School of Engineering (For example, the Hall of Innovation)?

Think about it!

Personally, I’m proud to be a NYP student, and I’m proud to be a student studying the Diploma in Multimedia Infocomm & Technology in the School of Engineering (Electronics)~!! :D

Since I made this post on Outside the LT, which is quoted as “one-stop station for all news, events and happenings in DMIT – Diploma in Multimedia and Infocomm Technology, NYP!”, I will post it here too.

People please support Outside the LT, it is managed by one of my favorite lecturer, Mr Edmund Teo. My fellow DMIT mates should know him pretty well ;)

MM Lee says S’pore needs more diversity to cater to different strengths of students

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has said the country needs to become a more diverse economy providing students with different outlets that fit their strengths and interests.

He was speaking after a visit to the Nanyang Polytechnic to see the latest developments in polytechnic education.

Minister Mentor Lee said Singapore’s economy needs all kinds of talented people.

That was exactly what Mr Lee saw when he visited the interactive and digital media and engineering schools in Nanyang Polytechnic.

Mr Lee feels that it is not just scoring in examinations that would give these students a good life. Some of them are good with their hands, while others are proficient with robots.

R Muthukumaran, a Nanyang Polytechnic student who is studying for a Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering, said: “I am from the SAF and everybody in the SAF is now modernising. I want to stay relevant to the system and this will definitely help me to last longer in the SAF.”

Mohammad Noh Abdul Rahim, who is studying for a Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, said: “In poly, we learn skills like how to use computer programmes and the final-year project did help widen our outlook on the economy.”

Nanyang Polytechnic too is expanding its courses. Its seven schools currently offer 33 full-time diploma courses and the number is going up to 45 soon to cater to 15,225 students.

Minister Mentor Lee said: “We now have to try and bring up people who do not necessarily do well in the universities but who will do well in life. That’s the concentration that we should give because people who go to university, (they make up) about 25 per cent, (people who go to) poly (technic), about forty plus per cent, and you have special schools, arts, sports schools and so on. You’ve got to go in that direction.”

During his interactive sessions with the students, Mr Lee was very keen to find out more about why they had chosen a particular course at Nanyang Polytechnic. He also wanted to know more about their future plans.

Mr Lee was also told that over the last four years, more than 90 per cent of Nanyang Polytechnic graduates have found jobs upon graduation.

News copied from the Channel News Asia official website :)

I was a NYP presentative in the dialogue session! I took a photo with MM Lee! I’ll post that picture up next time when I get the photo from the media.

Quite upset, the media flimed & interviewed me, but they never show it on the news. Never mind, it’s still a great experience ;)

I’ll be reading newspaper to follow up with this news tomorrow! Woots~

Thanks everyone for the help, hardwork, & effort~!! :D

Life is great on a train~!!

A young technician and his boss board a train passing through a mountain. They sit at the two seats right opposite the two seats which sits a young woman and her grandmother.

After a while, through the looks in their eyes, it is obvious that the young woman and the young technician are interested in each other.

Soon, the train passes into a tunnel and it is pitch black. There is a sound of a kiss followed by a sound of a slap.

When the train emerges from the tunnel, the four sit there without saying a word.

The grandmother is thinking to herself, “It was very daring for that young man to kiss my granddaughter, but I’m glad she slapped him.

The boss is is there thinking to himself, “I didn’t know this young man was brave enough to kiss the girl, but I sure wish she hadn’t missed when she tried to slapped him and hit me instead! So painful…

The young woman was sitting there, thinking, “I’m glad the guy kissed me, but I wish my grandmother hadn’t slapped him! Poor thing…

The young tech sat there with a satisfied smile on his face. He thought to himself, “Life is great on a train~!! How often does a guy have a chance to kiss a beautiful girl and slap his boss all at the same time? LOL.”

It’s so gonna be a Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

I would like to take back all the rantings I said yesterday! :D I know that this is so gonna be a once in a life time experience which not everyone could get – it is such a rare opportunity!

Okay, what happened today – I attended the VVIP Visit Rehearsal; it was great, simply GREAT. I have regained the enthusiasm in this upcoming event. It made me feel so honored and delighted!xD

Basically, to keep this post a short one – we are simply brief about those general “do & don’t”s, and the Deputy Registrar is so nice as to share some presentation/conversation tips with us.

I made several new friends today, although I didn’t get to speak much with all of them, but I’m glad that I have met them. They are all nice and friendly – People like Grace, Kumar, Andrew, Alexstine and the other fellow 5 students representing  various schools in Nanyang Polytechnic.

As I expected, they are all special students who have interesting backgrounds and really positive attitude; mature and confident; humble and smart; & most of them has higher GPA than me, well that’s cool! :D

Today, I’m already so honored, to meet with all these great people of NYP:

- Our NYP Principal+CEO (PCEO), Mr Chan Lee Mun
Trust me, most students in NYP doesn’t even know NYP has a principal, or even if they do, they don’t know who is he

- Deputy Principals, Mr Edward Ho (Development) & Mr John Tan (Technology)
Yes, They are friendly people, especially Mr John Tan, he actually joked with us during our photography session placement rehearsal xD

- School of Engineering’s Director Mr Chan Yew Meng
YES! I finally get to see him in person! Actually every semester I get a commendation letter from him but I never get to meet him at all – he’s like a legend who existed only in paper :x BUT NOW! No more legend, I finally get the chance to meet him, so cool! Wahaha!

- Mr Anthony Woon from Registrar
He’s friendly! And yes, he’s the guy who were there with us during the Dialogue Session with Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Ministry of Education)

And many many more other managers and lecturers~ even if I don’t get to meet up with this VVIP who is coming to visit us next monday, simply meeting these people whom I mentioned above, is already honorable – not everyone in NYP get to speak to them or seeing them in person! :D

And yes, I don’t feel so stress now, thanks to everyone.

I wanna do charity work~ if there are ever anymore or other charity work to be done, please let me know – notify me on MSN or send me an email @ kongwenbin@live.com and I’ll be more than glad to give you a reply if I’m able to do it. Just send me the information, and yeah, I DO check my mail box regularly! :p

I’m feeling so HIGH now – simply excited! HAHA. It’s sooooooo cool can?! Feel like flying~

I will blog more about my experiences after the actual event took place. By then, I could blog more freely, note that currently I’m blogging with several things to avoid – such as not to mention the name of this VVIP and such.

Last but not least, I’m super happy that I could have a chance to take photo with this VVIP! Although it’s gonna be a group photo (not just me and him), I’m delighted! Not every Singaporeans (anyone) gets a chance to see him in person, or to stand 200 metres (Did I exaggerated? >.<) near him – let alone taking photo! HAHA!

I got so many people to “THANKS” after this event. Well, yeah! I’ll leave it like this and blog again when I get the chance to!

Life’s great, enjoy life!

Cheerios!

Best regards,
Kong Wen Bin

Preparation for the VVIP Visit in January 2009

It started out like this – few weeks ago, I have been selected to attend several rounds of interview to be a representative of NYP on a VVIP (Very Very Important Person) Visit event in January 2009. The details of the visit is not convenient to be disclosed.

Anyway, I have been super enthusiatic about this visit – it’s a rare opportunity and it’s like a kind of test for me. I have really worked hard for it, I read up on articles, I spend time reflecting on myself after each round of interview. I have been really hoping that I could get through all these interview and get myself selected as the representative!

Last week, finally, the series of interviews has come to an end. I’m one of the final ten representative for this event of VVIP Visit. I’m delighted. Seriously, I’m happy, my effort has an outcome, I did it! I’m so glad, really!

However, as time past, the event date draws nearer and nearer… I find myself being heavily pressurised. Seriously, I felt a tremendous amount of burden on my shoulders, so much that I could not imagine.

My school’s deputy director and all those high ranked manager came to speak to me – on one hand, they tell me to relax myself, don’t pressure myself, don’t need to stress, just try my best. On the other hand, they emphasize to me that I’m the only one representing the school, it’s a huge responsibility, so I have to be very prepared and ready for this event.

So, should I be feeling relaxed, or should I be feeling stressed over the responsibility?

I’m told to put my Final Year Project aside and focus on preparing for this event, it’s good, it gives me more time to prepare for the event; but then… what about next week’s presentation? Yes, I’m given the rights to put my project aside, but I have not done enough to give a good presentation! How could it do? End up I will still have to rush them during the weekends…

Back to the preparation of the VVIP Visit – for those who know me, they all know that I am actually a very confident person. Yes, a very very confident one. BUT. This time, I’m afraid it is hard for me to be myself.

All the pressured feelings and stressness is covering all my confidence… I spent the whole night last night preparing, but I only get around one third of them done. There’s still so much to study/learn/find out/practise for the rehearsal tomorrow.

Okay, enough rantings, I still have sooooooooooo much more preparation to do. Shall blog again when I get the time.

Cheerios!
