THANK YOU 2WO ROSS
Many people may not agree, but care for soldiers means tough training. However, the training have to be reasonable and has a purpose. During my stay in SISPEC Bravo for my BSLC course, I really learned a lot.
When talk about military aspects such as fire movement, harboring drills, patrolling mission and stuffs like that, I’d say that I really learned a lot for the fact that my Platoon Commander (PC) in SISPEC Bravo is 2WO ROSS. He is really skilled, knowledgeable, respectable, and most importantly, inspiring.
He taught us many useful things which other people or platoon didn’t get to learn, such as the fire movement that he taught us – it’s very different from what we learned during field camp; reason being (I personally interpreted) that the one we learned is the “model answer” which is written on the book, which is theoretically correct, whereas the one which he taught us is the “real answer” which is applicable in a real fight/war, which is the most logically correct version of fire movement. Whatever movement he takes, he explain to us why, and all of them are so logical, we can easily remember them by heart without memorising (unlike the “model answer”).
He called himself the “Pain”. Which is rather true, he can be the most scary “Pain” which you would never have expected – all other platoon would be sleeping on groundsheets at 6pm while all of you are high kneeling with field pack over head, then later eat dinner already go to a vegetable & dig shell scrape in pure darkness, & eventually sleep at 1am
However, all his punishment and scoldings are very reasonable, he don’t punish us for nothing. He is actually a very nice guy and treat us very well, with a lot of welfare if you’d realize.. he has a reasonably high standard in mind and want us to meet it, once we meet it, we’re good soldiers in some sense; all these bit and pieces actually help us a lot.
He’s only “Pain” when we did the wrong thing (come on, if you hide at one corner and rest for hours during Wanderer, of course you deserve to get punish), and during trainings (come on, think about why his trainings are all so efficient, unlike all other conductors which somewhat repeats the “wait to rush” & “rush to wait” cycle).
I respect him a lot & am actually quite tempted to request to stay back for ASLC and stay in 2WO Ross’s platoon, as that’s the way I could learn as much as I can. However, since I’m posted to the School of Artillery and it’s located at Khatib Camp (very near my house!!), and I discussed with my father, he don’t want me to be in infantry or guards at all (I got scolded for even wanting to discuss >.<), thus I dropped the idea.
Nonetheless, I will always remember what he told me during my PC Interview – he told me something which inspired me a lot; I can’t remember it word by word but the meaning is saying something like this,
No matter what vocation you are, or be it an officer or a warspecs, just do your best in everything you do, touch your heart, put in the effort, and don’t be a cow which only move when being smacked, move awhile then stop, waiting to get smacked again. Always try your best, you’re not at your limit if you are still able to consciously ask yourself if you’re at your limit.
For that, in my future vocation in Artillery or whatever/where ever I will be posted to, I will always remember his words deep by my heart, to always put in my best in everything I do, take initiative, perform leadership, be efficient, do my best in all that I do, put in the effort and BE A MAN, DO THE RIGHT THING~!!!
